Anthony Noreen
Head Coach - Tri-City Storm (USHL)

Anthony Noreen, of Chicago, Illinois was hired by the organization on May 26th, 2017 as the eighth Head Coach in team history. After getting the organization back to the playoffs in his first season, Noreen’s leadership guided the Storm to its best regular season performance in team history during the 2018-2019 season. The Storm set team records for most wins (45), most points (95), and posted a regular season record of 45-12-3-2. In the postseason, the Storm advanced to the Western Conference Final before falling to the eventual Clark Cup Champion, Sioux Falls Stampede. The Storm captured its second Anderson Cup in team history, and Noreen’s second Anderson Cup Championship of his career (Youngstown 2015). In addition to winning his second career Anderson Cup Championship, Noreen was awarded USHL Coach of the Year for the second time in his career (Youngstown 2015). He was the first recipient of the USHL’s Coach of the Year Award in Tri-City Storm history.

Noreen’s 2018-2019 Storm team produced multiple league award winners and several NHL draft picks. Zac Jones was named the USHL’s Rookie of the Year, Isaiah Saville was named the USHL’s Goaltender of the Year, Ronnie Attard was named the USHL’s Defenseman of the Year, and Ronnie Attard was also named the USHL’s Player of the Year for the 2018-2019 season. Including his time at the helm of the Youngstown Phantoms, Noreen has had at least one player win each of the league’s year end awards for on ice performance. At the 2019 NHL Draft in Vancouver, British Columbia, the Tri-City Storm led the world in producing NHL draft picks. No junior hockey team in the world that competes in a full league schedule could claim more draft picks than the Tri-City Storm.

Noreen was promoted from General Manager/Head Coach to President of Hockey Operations/Head Coach on November 19th, 2019. Ethan Goldberg
Associate Coach - Tri-City Storm (USHL)

Ethan Goldberg, of Green Oaks, IL, was hired by the organization on June 28th, 2017 as an Assistant Coach prior to the beginning of the 2017-2018 season. Goldberg was behind the bench for Tri-City’s record breaking 2018-2019 Anderson Cup Championship season and coached the 2019 USHL Defenseman of the Year Ronnie Attard. Under Goldberg’s leadership, Tri-City has finished the regular season with the league’s top penalty kill percentage in each of the last two seasons (2018-2019, 2019-2020).

Storm defensemen who have been selected in the NHL Draft under Goldberg include Zac Jones, Ronnie Attard, and Mike Koster. Ronnie Attard set a USHL record for most goals scored in a single season by a defenseman (30) during the 2018-2019 regular season.

Prior to joining the Storm, Goldberg served as an Assistant Coach for the Sioux City Musketeers. During his four seasons behind the bench in Sioux City, the Musketeers claimed two Western Conference regular season titles and an Anderson Cup Championship in 2017. Prior to his time in the USHL, Goldberg served as a volunteer assistant coach with the Bemidji State Beavers during the 2013-2014 season.

Goldberg played college hockey for Lake Forest College (NCAA DIII) from 2008 to 2012. He joined the coaching staff of the Foresters as a Video Coach for the 2012-2013 season. Following his time at Lake Forest, Goldberg joined the staff at Bemidji State University as a Volunteer Assistant Coach for the 2013-2014 season.

Troy Thibodeau
Assistant Coach - Tri-City Storm (USHL)

Troy Thibodeau, of Danvers, MA, was hired by the organization on August 2nd, 2018 as an Assistant Coach prior to the beginning of the 2018-2019 season. Thibodeau was behind the bench for Tri-City’s record breaking 2018-2019 Anderson Cup Championship season. Under Thibodeau’s leadership, Tri-City’s power play finished the 2018-2019 season with the second most power play goals in the Western Conference (58), and finished the 2019-2020 with the most power play goals scored during the regular season in the Western Conference (44).

Prior to joining the Storm, Thibodeau spent two seasons with UMass Lowell as Director of Hockey Operations. During his tenure, the River Hawks program went 44-30-3 during the 2016-2017 & 2017-2018 seasons. UMass Lowell captured a Hockey East Championship and an NCAA Tournament berth in 2017. As Director of Hockey Operations for UMass Lowell, Thibodeau coordinated team travel, oversaw team compliance and camps, and analyzed team video.

Prior to his time at UMass Lowell, Thibodeau served as a video coach for Merrimack College during the 2015-2016 season. Along with analyzing and breaking down video, he provided the Warriors program with advanced statistics and analytical data. Thibodeau spent the 2014-2015 season with the Wentworth Institute of Technology as an Assistant Coach. Before launching his coaching career, Thibodeau played three years of college hockey for the University of Southern Maine.

Matt Zaba
Goaltending Coach - Tri-City Storm (USHL)

Matt Zaba, of Yorkton, Saskatchewan, was hired by the organization on July 27th, 2017. Zaba coached the USHL's Goaltender of the Year in his first two seasons with the Storm (Filip Larsson 2018, Isaiah Saville 2019).

Zaba was drafted 231st overall by the Los Angeles Kings in the 2003 NHL Draft following a junior hockey career in the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) with the Penticton Panthers & Vernon Vipers. Zaba played four years of college hockey with the Colorado College Tigers.

His professional hockey career began during the 2007-2008 seasons in the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) with the Charlotte Checkers and Idaho Steelheads. Zaba made his NHL debut with the New York Rangers on January 23rd, 2010 in a road game against the Montreal Canadiens.

Following his professional playing career, Zaba joined Colorado College as a Volunteer Assistant Coach from 2016-2017 prior to joining the Storm.

Ryan Ward
Director of Player Development - Tri-City Storm

Ward joins the Windy City Storm after spending last season as Head Coach of the Selects Academy U15 team. Previously, Ward was an Assistant Coach for the St. Louis Blues’ American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate San Antonio Rampage.

Ward served as Video Coach for the New York Islanders from 2008-2012. During that time, he was selected to coach for Team USA at the World Championships in both 2010 (Germany) and 2012 (Finland). From 2014-2016, Ward was part of the Toronto Maple Leafs (NHL) and Toronto Marlies (AHL) organization.

Ward spent the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 campaigns as an Assistant Coach for the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, in charge of the team’s Forward Development and Power-Play. After capturing the 2018 Hamilton Spectator Trophy as the OHL regular season champions, the Soo went on to win the OHL Western Conference Championship before falling to the Hamilton Bulldogs in the finals. Two of Ward’s players were selected as first-round NHL draft picks: Barrett Hayton (5th Overall, 2018 – Arizona Coyotes), and Morgan Frost (27th Overall, 2017 – Philadelphia Flyers).

Karl Lindén
Head Skills Instructor - Tri-City Storm (USHL) / Windy City Storm

Karl coached last season with Ryan Ward at South Kent School, Selects Academy, as an Associate Coach with the U15 team. Karl started at Selects Academy in 2018 as Head of Skill Development and Assistant Coach for U18. Karl oversaw the development of all players in the Selects Academy program during his tenure at Selects. Karl also was responsible for in-game management of the Defensemen and the Penalty Kill.

A native of Stockholm, Sweden Linden grew up playing for the distinguished AIK organization finishing with Juniors J18 & J20 SuperElite League. Linden currently owns and operates Konquer Hockey, a leading Skill & Development Company in CT. Linden & Konquer Hockey has a clientele consisting of (NHL), European & Minor Professional, DI, DIII and Prep School players.

Joe Meloni
Strength and Conditioning Coach
Hailing from Falmouth, MA, Joe joined CYA in the fall of 2020. Previous to joining the organization, Joe spent 2 years as a coach at the legendary Mike Boyle Strength and Conditioning (Boston, MA), and also ran the strength and conditioning program for Malden Catholic High School (Malden, MA). Along with these two positions, Joe served as the strength coach for the Arlington High School (Arlington, MA) hockey team, who went on to win the 2020 Massachusetts Super 8 State Championship. Joe completed internships with Keene State College Athletics in 2018, as well as with the San Jose Sharks in the summer of 2019. He holds a bachelors degree in Human Performance, with a focus in coaching, from Keene State College. He also is a NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, Certified Functional Strength Coach and attained a Functional Movement Screen Level 1 certification. A lifelong athlete that played both lacrosse and hockey in college, Joe has a passion for developing elite athletes. He prides himself on not only having an extensive knowledge of how to train for hockey performance but also his ability to instill values that turn our athletes into valuable members of society long after their playing careers are over.
John Varga
Mite/Squirt Development Coach
John is a Chicago native with 6 years of International experience as a member of Team USA and 9 years at the pro level. He played his entire WHL Junior career with the Tacoma Rockets amassing 333pts in 254 games. He still ranks as the 2nd top US born player in WHL scoring history. John Was a member of US Select 15, 16, 17, 18 teams during his amateur career. Winner of Gold and Silver medals at the 92&93 US Olympic Festivals. He then played for the 94 US World Junior Team and the over 20 US National team preparing for the Olympic games. A very fast skating goal scoring winger who still holds records for on ice testing at the US training centers.
John was Selected by the Washington Capitals in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft. Was part of the birth of NHL summer training programs with the Caps that saw 12 players in three draft years make the NHL club. After his pro career he retired in the suburbs of Chicago near his Hockey Hall of Fame father Lou Varga. Lou was the Trainer for the Chicago Black Hawks for 39 years before his induction into the HHOF.
Since retiring, John has remained very active in Chicago youth hockey. He is the Founder and Head Instructor for the Chicago Speed which encompasses Hockey Camps and Elite level teams as well as a skills coach throughout Illinois. Was the 2007&2008 Chicago Brick Series Head Coach and also Coached with legendary Denis Savard for the 02 Chicago Brick Team. He started his Chicago AAA coaching career at the Chicago Mission with the 2002&2003 teams. He then moved on to the Chicago Fury where he has built numerous Squirt AAA teams. He will be coaching his 16th Squirt AAA team this fall. He is known for pushing his athletes to an elite level of play and creating a strong team environment. His teams are always one of the top teams in the country.

Rob Rassey
Skill Development Specialist
Rob Rassey joined the Harvard men's hockey coaching staff in the fall of 2013. In his first season with Harvard, Rassey helped forwards Jimmy Vesey and Sean Malone earn All-Ivy League accolades, while Malone was tabbed Ivy League Co-Rookie of the Year. In continuing to develop the forwards, Vesey made national waves in Rassey's second year, leading the country in goals and finishing as the Ivy and ECAC Player of the Year, as well as a Hobey Hat Trick finalist. The culmination of Vesey's development occured in 2016 when he earned the Hobey Baker Award as college hockey's top player. Rassey oversaw Harvard's standout power play in 2018-19, as the Crimson finished second in the nation with a 28.3% conversion rate on the man advantage. The Crimson had one of the top scoring offenses in the nation, averaging 3.21 goals per game. He also mentored Hobey Hat Trick finalist Ryan Donato during the 2017-18 season, as Donato earned All-America and ECAC Hockey Player of the Year honors and led the nation with an average of .90 goals per game. Harvard's offense continued to excel in Rassey's fourth season (2016-17), ranking second in the nation with 4.06 goals. That high-powered offense helped Harvard capture the Beanpot, Ivy League, ECAC regular season and championship titles and reached the NCAA Frozen Four. Harvard also posted 28 victories, the most since the 1989 national championship season. Harvard's offense ranked ninth in the country in 2015-16 with a 2.41 goals per game average. The Crimson's high-powered offense led to it reaching the ECAC Hockey Tournament championship game for the second-straight season, while also earning an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Harvard posted a 19-11-14 record and won the Shillelagh (Notre Dame) and Mariucci (Minnesota) regular season tournaments. The 2014-15 season also saw Harvard lead the ECAC in scoring at 3.23 per game. Vesey led the conference in scoring and Kyle Criscuolo and Tyler Moy each finished in the top-10. Nationally, Harvard ranked 10th in scoring offense at 3.27 goals per game. Its offense prowess led to a 21-win season, the ECAC Tournament championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. Rassey comes to Cambridge after a successful two-year stint as an assistant coach with the Youngstown Phantoms of the United States Hockey League (USHL). In his first year coaching with the club, he helped the Phantoms return to the USHL playoffs, securing a fourth-place finish thanks to a 32-win season. Last year, he saw the team notch 37 wins and finish third in its division, claiming another playoff berth. Prior to working with the Youngstown program, Rassey worked with USA Hockey Massachusetts Player Development for the select festival as a scout and coach. Before that, he was a volunteer coach with his alma mater, Northeastern University, from 2009-2011, helping the team to a 30-32-10 record. At Northeastern, Rassey was in charge of special teams, in game scouting/adjustments, game plan design, video breakdown, and bench management. Rassey skated at Northeastern from 2005-2009, where his team improved from a three-win season his freshman year to a 25-win campaign as a senior – setting a university record and earning the school’s first NCAA tournament bid in more than 20 years. He was a four-time letterman, a four-time Hockey East Academic Honor Roll recipient – including being named a Hockey East Distinguished Scholar in 2009 – and recipient of the 2008 Coaches’ Award for loyalty and friendship to the NU hockey program. He graduated in 2009 Magna Cum Laude with a degree in finance and management. Following his time at Northeastern, Rassey played for the Youngstown Phantoms, then of the North American Hockey League (NAHL), and was a two-time captain.
Mike Monti
Head Coach - Windy City Storm U18

Mike Monti joined the Storm in the fall of 2020 and returns for his second season as the Head Coach of the U18 team. He has coaching experience in NCAA Division I, Division III, Pro, New England prep, and youth hockey.

Monti began coaching at his alma mater, Western New England University, in 2009. Serving as an Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator, he helped revitalize the team to become one of the most competitive programs in the ECAC-Northeast Conference. His recruited players went on to win the Rookie-of-the-Year award, All-Rookie team, and All-League Awards.

From 2012-15, Monti served as the Director of Hockey Operations for The University of Vermont (Hockey East). During that time, the Catamounts reached the NCAA National Tournament (2014), and The Hockey East Championship (2015), while posting back-to-back 20 win seasons. 4 Catamounts signed NHL contracts, and 19 more moved on to pro hockey.

In the fall of 2015, Monti became the Assistant Coach at Williams College (NESCAC). The team finished first overall in the league in 2015-16, reaching the NCAA Elite Eight, had the NESCAC Player of the Year, an All-American, and several All-NESCAC player honors. Williams College also received the NESCAC Coaching Staff of The Year Award.

In 2017-18, Monti served as Head Coach of Williams, while Bill Kangas was on sabbatical. In his first season as head coach, the team finished with 14 wins, and advanced all the way to the NESCAC semifinal. Several players took All-NESCAC player honors.

From 2018-20, Monti coached in New England Prep School Hockey, where 12 of his former players committed to Division I/III schools over the course of two seasons. He simultaneously held a Development Coach role with The Florida Everblades of the ECHL.

Monti graduated from Western New England University in 2009 with degrees in Management and Psychology. He also received his Master’s of Business Administration from Western New England in 2012.

Topher Scott
Head Coach - Windy City Storm U16

Topher Scott returns to the Chicago area where he grew up and won a National Championship with CYA in 2000.

He played junior hockey in the USHL and was a 2-year captain with the Chicago Steel before going on to play college hockey at Cornell University where he was also a 2 year captain and ECAC Champion.

Following a brief minor-pro career, Topher went on to be the Graduate Assistant Coach at Miami-OH where he won a CCHA Championship and coached Hobey Baker award winner Andy Miele. He then got a job as an Assistant Coach with his alma mater Cornell where he won multiple Ivy League Championships and was instrumental in recruiting the teams that have been Number One in the country in recent years.

Topher has built many great relationships around North America through his high level coaching experience and looks forward to bringing that experience to the Storm.

Topher resides in Vernon Hills with his wife, Emma, and two daughters, Paige and Lucy.

Red Brow
Director of Goaltending - Windy City Storm

Redmond Brow 28, of Newport RI, is in his first season with the Chicago Young Americans. Growing up in Rhode Island he played hockey till High School where he was a 3x All State Goalie of the Year and a State Finalist in 2010 with Rogers High School.

After High he began his coaching career back at Rogers High School where he served as Assistant Coach from 2012-2015 then moved on to Noble and Greenough School (NE Prep) in Dedham MA where he worked from 2016-2018 as Assistant/Goalie Coach. While working at Nobles he also served as the Goalie Coach with Salve Regina University (NCAA D3) in Newport RI from 2017-2019 with Salve he was reach a NCAA Frozen Four Final in the 2016-17 season.

From there he moved on to serve as an Assistant Coach with Bemidji State University (NCAA D1) for the 2019-20 season. With the Beavers his primary responsibilities were Video Breakdown and Goalie Coach.

Sean Freeman
2012 Head Coach
Coach Freeman is a consummate professional and brings a superb hockey background to the Chicago Young Americans organization. Sean spent his youth hockey career by playing five years for the Chicago Young Americans AAA program before moving on to Junior Hockey in the USHL; playing for both the Sioux City Musketeers and Wisconsin Capitals. Sean also played in the NAHL for Springfield Jr Blues and the Kalamzoo Jr K Wings. His next four years were spent playing NCAA D3 hockey for Lake Forest College where he was a captain and led the team in scoring all four years while amassing nearly one point per game in over 100 games played. Sean then graduated to the pro ranks playing in the ECHL, UHL, WPHL & CHL from 1998-2005. The last two seasons Coach Freeman has been the Head Coach of the Chicago Young Americans PeeWee Major and Bantam Minor teams. Also the past two seasons Coach Freeman has been the Head Coach of the Chicago Bulldogs Mite AA teams. Previously Coach Freeman served as the Head Coach & Associate Hockey Director for the Chicago Bulldogs where he coached the Squirt Major & Pee Wee Minor Central States Teams including 1st Place finish in Central States. Coach Freeman also was the Head Coach of the Falcons Squirt Midget Minor & Midget Major teams, the NIHL Gold team in 2016-17 and the Jr Falcons Mite AA team in 2015-16. Additionally, Sean was the Hockey Director & Varsity Head Coach for an impressive 18th straight seasons at Highland Park Giants High School Hockey program.
